record shop assistants who develop and attitude based on the fact that
A. Cos they work at the shop their sets consist entirely of what is "hot" from the shop's shelves
therefore
B. They have to work at the shop to get A.
C. The attitude comes on from a combination of old fashioned distain for the DJs that come in (after all, now the tables are turned, or rather the counter) and a proxy increase in hat size if the shop becomes "cool".
D. The attitude reaches critical Mass when in a shit attempt to win points, promoters "book the shop" to host rooms.
E. The attitude goes airborne when the shop assistants get bookings.
F. The shop assistant then cannot leave the shop, because they would lose access to A. and also they do not get paid enough for DJing to leave the shop (or pay for records). They just get paid enough and get enough profile to drive them mental. But not enough to break free.
G. They become so insufferable in the shop it's like asking for something from a sleepy glacier that doesn't like you.
H. No one goes in the shop anymore except kids who actually look up to the assistants.
I. Shop closes.
J. Everyone dies. The End.
