one personal for people you've had contact with in the last decade etc

and a "fan page" where you put details out of releases, gigs etc

oh you can sign out of chat, so you'll be permanently off line, so your chat wont ping

^^^ What he said! And there's the option to 'ignore all invites from this person' so gradually you'll get less and less spam from people (unless it's gigs that you're DJing at, which you might actually want invites for!)

I'm not kidding it took about a year just to try and get the alerts to stop. I'd get about 2 keystrokes away from changing the settings and PING another cheery chatter would pop up and the button I was pressing just ended up making them think I was rude and I'd smash it to bits and shelve the whole fucker for another few months
