there is a real north/south thing i have noticed.

northerns don't like 'enders so much because they think it is 'miserable' but we find it quite funny

ditto up there. Northerns laugh at the street but we don't really get it . It seems really unrealistic and comic

You mean you don't believe there is a pub, 2 shops, a garage, a knicker factory, a bookies, a cafe, a bistro and a lap dancing club on the end of every Mancunian cobbled street?

No I get that. A few exes would sit and guffaw all the way through eastenders and I am lost as to why. It's as funny as cancer. That's why it is funny they say. I'm puzzled I reply. Fuck off out of my life they go. And I do.

There is some smart observation there mate.

Having lived pretty much about the same years in both camps I'd say that life in London is as the stereotype ; faster, meaner, less friendly etc etc so people like to see soap characters in more miserable scenarios . Then they can laugh at them (and a bit at themselves on the quiet)

Norths is a tougher environment materialistically. London is a 'harder' place to live but it is wealthy and culturally chubby. So northerns like their characters cheerful and funny. It's further away from the drabness of life and they like to see amplified versions of themselves too.

Basically the soaps are the truth written as a huge panto.

Tune in tomorrow for more sociology for visiting Scots and French Aristos on the run.

That program on ITV 3, Bin Laden. Watched it. The world's most powerful nation couldn't find one man. Crazy! Still, I thought it was well put together.

Why doesn't the BBC do this, I am sure they can.

Having worked in commercial radio would it be a step too far to say commercial media's first objective is to sell ad space?

Obviously they sugar coat it by saying if something is 'good' it sells space automatically.

But delivering quality is not actually their job.

    Brookside was the best soap

    with the best storylines like

terry's wife going up some scalfolding with a pram and falling off to her and the baby's doom

trevor jordache being bumped off and buried under the patio

jimmy corkhill and his son little jimmy corkhill being involved in some serious dealing

    jimmy's dog being called cracks

    anna friel's kiss

and the dixon - corkhill war, which started after jimmy was off his head giving ron's son a lift, crashed and killed him, jimmy's graveside confession is still one of the funniest things i've ever seen

BBC Play School presenters 'went on-air stoned'

BBC staff openly smoked marijuana at the corporation’s headquarters during the 1960s and 70s and Play School presenters even went on-air stoned, former stars have disclosed.

The corridors of Television Centre often reeked of the class B drug as BBC employees and visiting pop groups regularly smoked joints.
On one occasion, Rick Jones and Lionel Morton, presenters of Play School, got stoned before filming the children’s programme, it is claimed.
As well as drugs, the BBC was apparently also a hot bed of sex with staff “bonking all over the place”.
Recalling his time on Play School for a BBC documentary, former presenter Johnny Ball revealed that drug use spilt on screen in a nativity scene.
He said: “There was Rick Jones, Lionel Morton and myself. They got stoned on the biggest joint you’ve ever seen — in the studio.

“We were in silhouette as the three shepherds with our crooks. Lionel purposely held his crook so the crook didn’t show.
“They were absolutely stoned out of their minds.”

Ball, 73, who insisted that he was not stoned himself, added: “I couldn’t work with it. I really couldn’t.”
Others told how a culture of drug use was effectively tolerated at the BBC.
Joan Bakewell, the presenter, said visiting pop stars would often smoke cannabis at Television Centre.
She said: “Of course they smoked and they didn't smoke ordinary cigarettes.”
Sir David Attenborough, the wildlife presenter and former BBC TWO controller, recalled pleading with colleagues: “Look, please, don’t smoke that stuff openly so we can all smell it. Just be sensible.”
Other stars disclosed that staff used their dressing rooms for sexual liaisons.
Former Doctor Who actress Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant, said: “People were bonking all over the BBC. Everybody was doing it on the premises.”
Janet Fielding, who played the Doctor’s sidekick Tegan, added: “Nobody cared whether you had sex in your dressing room.”

Former Blue Peter and Going Live presenter Sarah Greene told of her liaisons with former Radio 1 DJ Mike Smith.
She said: “On the occasions when we did see each other we had to take full advantage of that time.”
The disclosures are made in Tales Of Television Centre on BBC Four, May 17.
