I don't think they captured the book (mind you, when do they ever?) and the choice to make the film sort of "is it real or is she imagining it' a bit of a liberty.
The point of the book being that kids can be totally evil and only show it to one parent. For real. There was a lot of fuss about the book and I think they took that option so as not to offend america. It goes in the same category as Inglorious Basterds being almost ruined because 'Quentin' bad boy Tarantino didn't have balls to spell bastard properly. Endless slaughter in the film? not a prob. Beat a bloke with a bat til his head explodes? HELL YEAH. Spell bastard properly? NO CHANCE
Film is great stand-alone thing though defo mate.
I find Tilda Swinton a bit of a fruity old ham but by far the worst ladyham is :
I can hardly look at that picture it is so charged with "I'm MAD me, Cuuurazay! I'm BONKERS" it makes me feel ill. And she is reigning it in as best as she can possibly imagine.
