Post  Fandango Widewheels Wed Oct 20, 2010 5:32 pm

I've fallen into the trap of buying old vinyl again. Too much free time on my hands + discogs is an expensive problem.

I currently don't have any vinyl decks, only CD's. So I'm trying to decide, do I buy a pair of 1210's (will have to be second hand) or do I buy one, digitise my vinyl and spend my hard earned on Traktor and a decent USB controller as burning cd's is a right pain?

Anyone on here got or used Traktor?

Yeah, my brother's got it. He uses timecode CDs. Lot's of fun, and a piece of piss to master if you can mix to start off with

No that's a good answer. What controller is your brother using? I was thinking of going down the Allen & Heath route but that is seriously big bucks.

Mark Ellison uses traktor...seen it in use...looks piss easy tbh dude. Still has to mix....I have 1200's (not used anymore - but are there incase) and a pair of CDJ800's....worth the investment as I do still like the hands on approach.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, nothing like the warm sound and feel of vinyl. I just get the feeling that unless you're producing Hawtin'esque sets on Traktor in the near future you're going to be way behind the times.

I have the demo version of Traktor, so my sets are strictly limited to 30 minutes. Then all the lights go out and my pc shuts down. Shocked

He's got the X1, which is great to use. You can use one of the knobs to scroll through and select your tracks on screen (rather than having to use the mouse) so there's much less of 'checking your emails'. This therefore makes it more hands-on, fun to use, and interactive with your 'crowd'... if you have one!! Cool

We once booked one, who shall remain nameless, who didn't even know how to set the fucker up. Apparently he would usually have his mate along with him who did it but he was off doing something else. I ended up having to call a mate of mine down who hd a similar set up.

Paolo Mojo recently played at Danceteria and his Traktor just kept on cutting off for most part of the beginning of his set, good half an hour or so. Rebooted his laptop etc and was fine.

Thing is with these they just seem too unreliable to me.

Of course you get all kinds of fuckery with cdj´s, and vinyl aswell(mainly because theyre so fuckin heavy to carry around Wink) but for me the whole laptopDJ´ng just seems way too fiddly and unstable...

(At the end of the day - as long as the music comes out from the speakers, decent volume, well played etc., the punters wont give a flying fuck if the music was played from a gramaphone, iphone, cdjs, vinyl or laptop.)
