I'd say there is more shit about now as mp3's are cheaper to produce (free) vs pressing vinyl.

I imagine the ratio of worthwhile output and shit is a constant.

Am I right in thinking it's not a proper topic without a graph?

A clever use of statistics, but you're neglecting an important data set.

Proportionally, shite to alright may have remained constant, but volume has increased. Therefore there is more shite about today, and conversely more good stuff, but don't let facts get in the way of using statistics to make out you're correct

And, also the mastering isn't very good in some of these tracks. DIY mastering.

No. Mastering is a process that involves a Mastering engineer, his ears, some speakers that cost more than a house and at minimum a massive EQ and super compressor.

The things you are referring to that call themselves mastering plug ins are 'finishing' tools but in no way meet the industry standard of a Mastered track.

Most people don't even know that before you can even get a track mastered it has to be delivered with no limiters and needs to be at -3dB.

I mean industry people by 'people'.

Mastering is one of many words that have lost all meaning. It is a process it's not something you can buy.

So, when you hear a track and it sounds dull and flat - does that mean the Master Engineer has been missed out of the chain?

It's badly produced and unfinished more than likely.

Also it's economic. We master everything but even with a bulk deal each release rarely recoups the cost of proper mastering and art.

Conversely if you don't get a proper master you will never get a synch or comp or do any really pro business.

There is a real division between a 'proper' label and for want of a better phrase an 'internet' label.

So how long does it take to properly 'master' a track?
