two parts to this so bear with me.
1. Most of us on here are involved in the industry, full or part time. I know it's not very healthy but considering the amount of venues closed or closing and the recession having no end in sight.... do we stay or do we go?
I've only lost money at it over time but :
effort now required Vs the cost = ?
2. PLEASE don't take this the wrong way! I don't want to scare off newbies (we love to have you) but it got me thinking. The downturn in our scene is spookily matched with a MASSIVE surge in bedroom producers/DJs. I mean I can't even start to get into the amount of promos sent.... facebook is basically made of spam. Is it me or are the amateurs strangling the scene to death with love??
Any piss takers will be buried up to their necks in the desert.
for question 1, i think its how deeply involved with it you are, if your full time and its your main source of income, i think your gonna have stick with it and try and make it work, as it pays your bills, or pack it in completely and get a proper job
whereas a person involved in it part time, and has a job to pay the bills, can afford to stick it out, as they have a safety net to fall back on, so they can afford to lose some money while doing something they love.
and for question 2, i think theres a number of reasons for the downturn in venues/clubland
as you've mentioned the recession, its really affected the core age range of people who go out, even the students are being slightly more careful with their money now, so less people going out and all the problems that lead on from that
i dont think its the amateurs that are suffocating the scene, dj bedroom from bradford isnt stopping someone in london from going out, it all boils down to money.
the rise in bedroom producers is directly linked to the technology available, now all you need to start making tracks is a computer, and a copy of ableton/logic/cubase etc and you can make songs, some will be good, some not so good, if this technology was available 10-15 years ago, we'd be having that discussion then.
