Please elaborate (a bit, don't want to scare every one)... read a few interview with "big" producers where they actually say they just "master" as they go and don't really do much at the end other than maybe a peak limiter or something. I used to play around with Ozone, but I've not got the speakers to actually tell if what I'm doing is any good or just making it nice and loud!

I see Miss Token Bird as a deadly assassin. Breaking an arm of an assailant from the rear is only one position out of many. From the rear is just a difficult one to learn. So with that in mind watch out which angle you come at her cause I am sure her defenses will leave you in shreds!! Wink

Mastering is really making sure the needle stays on on the vinyl Wink

'Finishing' is probably a better word for Home production.

It is all about the room, speakers and compressors that cost as much as a car in proper Mastering. A huge expensive EQ and an oscilloscope is usual. Plus never trust a Mastering house without some platinum discs on the walls Wink

You can't master as you go. Mastering is about the finish. Amateurs Wink

Actually the best Mastering I've worked with was a wee Indian guy who only used an oscilloscope and a 30 x 2 band rack EQ (it wasn't even a fancy one like the 'massive passive' it was a normal Behringer or Mackie).

As Mastering studios go it was totally devoid of fancy gimmicks.

He mainly used a 3 (3!) band EQ-sweep to check (very weird).

But from what I could work out he used his ears mainly Wink But he was at least twice as good as anyone I'd used before and I always use him for important stuff. He used to engineer massive Bollywood orchestras and stuff. In a quiet moment he confessed to me he didn't understand why people paid him to master dance music it was so easy to sort out. He taught me loads.

All his platinum discs were for things like the LSO, The Jam, Talking Heads.... proper stuff. When I was working at The Exchange at the insistence of our label (and cost 4 times more than Adil) they had gold discs up for "Essential Mix 6 "and "Bonkers IV... more mental than B4~!" gold.... not platinum. It's a bit shit to 'compare discs' but it really said it all.

This quiet little asian guy was one of the top dogs but you wouldn't know it unless you were observant.
