For some reason i have a bizarre feeling today that i will slowly develop into my avatar in around 10-15 years. At which point i will then move to Scarborough or Bridlington depending on my mood at the time.

I'll give you an example. At the start I made it clear we were a bit odd musically so we needed to follow that but not be too obvious about it. I ALWAYS use black and white always have. I love anything victorian so that pops up a lot.

The rest is up to Ed. Basically we exchanged ideas a lot at the start but really he just gets it now and comes out with stuff I couldn't think of.

Lately for the new Matter flyer we were exchanging ideas about a 'portrait' (from Ed) so I said let's give the portrait the head of Sir Charle's Babbage's analytical engine and make it as if a victorian invented such an advanced calculating engine that they gave it robes and made it mayor.
    Very Happy

We'll see the results soon. (crosses fingers)

yes and no. It's computing power was proportional to how many wheels it had. There are huge floor to ceiling models but the one we used was one of the early small ones. A laptop Wink

I think he died before they built any big ones but I could be wrong.

I had a look. In fact they never managed to build one in his lifetime.

The one we use was put together by his son from parts Babbage had started

    VVWI... a bit meh... - Page 2 180px-12

but later much bigger ones were made from his designs

yeah it's one of those weird things. I was looking at loads of difference engines and the first one from this angle looked a bit like a face. Not been doctored in any way.

In terms of what was the first it's all really debatable. I mean technically an abacus is a computer. If it's about strictly being programable then in fact the FRENCH beat us to it with the Jaquard Loom. But Babbage's engine really made the leap to mechanised maths that outdid human capability.
